The Pioneer drive didn't particularly like the Dysan 8x DVD-R media we tried at first giving us a "burning failed" warning in Power2Go. However, on trying again it did manage to burn it but it still took twice as long as the Asus drive that had no issue what-so-ever.

Using a much higher quality disk from Plextor with Taiyo Yuden dye the two drives performed identically at the full 12x supported by the drives.

Pioneer recommends using Verbatim disks with its drives, and a few were sent with the retail package so we used the RW disks in these tests. However, the Asus still seems to outperform the Pioneer on average here by over a minute with -RW and half a minute with +RW writing on average.
